Salvation Army Luncheon Success!

It was a great day on Friday, Dec 14th when we held our annual Salvation Army Luncheon at the Curling Club in Trenton!

Every year for the past 60 years our club has held an annual Christmas luncheon in support of the Salvation Army and the good work they do in helping those who need help around the holidays in Quinte West. Every year we encourage our attendees with good food, liquid lubrication, and hearty laughter to open their wallets as wide as they can to help those who, perhaps, aren’t as blessed or fortunate as they are.

Nearly 200 individuals and businesses packed into the banquet hall above the Curling Club to listen to our own Past President John Lewis MC this annual event with his own uniquely original humour and commentary on the events of 2012 – both local, provincial, federal and global. His poetry is off-color and his good-natured ribbing is well-received by the audience and those taking “a few for the team”. Among those in attendance who were in John’s well-meaning sights were MPP Rob Milligan, MP Rick Norlock, former-MPP Lou Rinaldi, Mayor John Williams, Mayor Mark Walas, Colonel Friday, and many more.

The need this year was as great as ever with Salvation Army Captain Steve Manuel saying “Our Christmas registration program has seen a 30 per cent increase over 2011.”

Not to claim sole credit for the event our Committee Chairs Brad Little, John Lewis, and Wayne Simmons – all long-standing and proud Kiwanians – want to thank all of the donors and the participants for helping to make the event as success. In special note a great thanks needs to go to the students at Trenton Highschool who donated $3,000 from their own auction and the Phillips children – Jordan, Spencer, and Nicholas – whose website http://www.kidsforsalvationarmy.com raised $11,700 to contribute to the success of our event.

When the dust had settled and the totals tallied we were happy to hand over a cheque for nearly $85,000 to the Salvation Army!

“This event continues to boggle the mind,” said Manuel. “On behalf of the Salvation Army thank you for your support.”
